Where this started

I grew up between the Drakensberg escarpment and the Lowveld—a geography that makes abstraction difficult. The bush is unambiguously real. You learn quickly what actually sustains things and what is decoration.

That calibration followed me into business. I became interested in the gap between good ideas and things that work—and in the specific craft of closing it.

The work

For over a decade I have worked inside safari and hospitality—in operations, commercial roles, and as a guide to the industry for organisations trying to improve how they function. That work led to The Safari Operator, a practice built specifically for safari businesses that need an African operator's perspective.

In parallel I have built consulting work under The Smooth Operator—helping organisations translate strategy into systems that actually run. The clients are different. The underlying challenge is almost always the same: too much thinking, not enough execution.

Through Shuri Projects I am building earlier-stage ventures across property, agriculture, and experiences—the kinds of bets that are interesting precisely because the outcomes are not obvious yet.

What I believe

The African safari industry is one of the world's great storytelling machines. It shapes how millions of people understand an entire continent. Not enough of the people running that machine are from here. That is a problem I intend to be part of solving.

More broadly: the best businesses are built by people who understand their context deeply and are honest about what they do not know. The bush is a good teacher of both.

What I am building now

The Safari Operator and The Smooth Operator are both active and taking on the right work. Shuri Projects is building quietly across several fronts. This site is a place to document the thinking, share the field notes, and connect with the people who want to travel, work, or build alongside.

A note on this site

I wanted a publishing home I own—somewhere to write without the constraints of social platforms and without the need to manufacture an audience-first persona. The Field Notes are honest. The ventures are real. The opinions are mine.
