Why African Safari Brands Need More African Voices
The industry tells Africa's stories to the world. Not enough of those stories are told by Africans.
Bavu Vilane
I build businesses and experiences—sometimes from the middle of the African bush. Notes, journeys, and ventures from southern Africa.
I grew up with the Drakensberg escarpment on one side and the Lowveld on the other. That geography shaped the way I think about business: you learn very quickly what actually runs things, and what is just noise.
Today I work across safari, hospitality, operations, and early-stage ventures— building the companies and teams that make extraordinary things function. Sometimes from Johannesburg. Sometimes from a camp in the Greater Kruger. Increasingly from wherever the work is.
Field Notes
The industry tells Africa's stories to the world. Not enough of those stories are told by Africans.
An honest record of putting this thing together.
Notes from somewhere that is simultaneously very remote and very connected.
The bush runs perfectly without a single meeting, strategy deck, or KPI dashboard. There is a lesson in that.

Work
The work lives in two lanes—safari and hospitality, and operations and consulting. Different industry, same commitment to things actually functioning.
Safari operations, guest experience strategy, commercial advisory, and specialist industry projects. For lodges, operators, and destination businesses that want an African operator's perspective.

The Safari Operator is where Bavu's industry expertise translates into specific commercial services—from operational consulting for safari businesses to curated guest experiences. It is an African-led safari operations practice for the next generation of the industry.
The Smooth Operator is Bavu's consulting practice for organisations that need strategy translated into working systems. From operational audits to execution support, it is the side of the work that happens behind the scenes—and usually has the most impact.
Shuri is the holding space for Bavu's early-stage ventures, experiments, and investments—from property and agriculture to experiences and technology. Some are building quietly. Others will be announced when the time is right.
“The bush doesn't reward complicated. It rewards competent, prepared, and honest about what you don't know. Business should work the same way.”— Bavu Vilane
